Project brief

We were tasked with a complete garden overhaul.

We were thrilled to reconnect with a previous client who sought a complete garden overhaul, presenting us with several challenges, particularly the aging wooden pole retaining wall installed by the house builder. Remarkably, it had lasted over a decade. Her wishlist included a modern, low-maintenance space, a peaceful sunny spot, and a feature visible from her living room’s French doors.

Our design solution began with replacing the existing paving with contemporary porcelain tiles. This choice not only reduced maintenance but also brightened the lower area, which lacked natural light, thanks to the tiles’ reflective properties. The old poleswere replaced with a proper retaining wall, clad in 2×1 timber battens for a sleek finish.

To create a tranquil sunny space, we constructed a timber arch, which served a dual purpose: it made the area feel more secluded and created an inviting eye line. This space was surrounded by raised beds filled with a mix of colorful perennials and evergreens, providing structure and year-round interest. On sunny days, this peaceful area attracts bees and butterflies, adding to the garden’s charm. In fact, butterflies began visiting even before we completed the project.

The arch was planted with a blend of honeysuckle and jasmine, which will eventually cover it, adding a delightful fragrance on warm summer evenings.

For the lower area, we introduced a water blade feature, perfectly positioned to be appreciated from the living room. To enhance the garden’s ambiance, we installed lighting that brings the space to life at the flick of a switch. The water blade’s curtain of water is highlighted with an LED strip, the archway is illuminated, and the planting is accentuated, creating a magical atmosphere.

We were encouraged to enter this project into the UK-wide Pro Landscaper Awards under the title “Heavenly Escape.” It was a wonderful evening mingling with some of the country’s most talented designers and installers, and we were delighted to reach the final three.
